I used to think I was smart. My family’s always told me that, at least. Later on I realised I’m not really as smart as I wish I could be, compared to some of the truly brilliant people I know. It always surprises me when a school mate tells me s/he thinks I’m smart. It honestly makes me feel a lot more validated than, say, “cute” or something, ugh. Though I suppose “cute” is unavoidable when you’re a small Asian female who is tiny even by Asian standards. I realise that it is meant as a compliment, but I wish being called cute didn’t feel so…dismissive.
